PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF BI-DIRECTIONAL DC-DC CONVERTERS FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES

The performance analysis and comparison of two types of bidirectional DC-DC converters - Cascaded Buck-Boost-Capacitor in the middle (CBB-CIM) and Cascaded Buck-Boost-Inductor in the middle (CBB-IIM) for use in plug-in electric and hybrid electric vehicles. The comparison of the two converters is based on device requirements, rating of switches and components, control strategy and performance.

 BI-DIRECTIONAL DC-DC CONVERTER:

Non-isolated Bidirectional DC-DC Converters In the transformer-less non-isolated power conversion systems, the boost type and buck type dc-dc converter are chosen usually. The high frequency transformer based system is an attractive one to obtain isolation between the source and load sides.  The improving the efficiency, size, weight and cost, the transformer-less type is much more attractive. Thus, in the high power or spacecraft power system applications .where weight or size is the main concern, the transformer-less type is more attractive in high power applications. The combination of a step-up stage together with a step-down stage connected in antiparallel. The vehicle regenerative braking is accomplished by using the converter step-down stage, which gives a path for the braking current and allows the recovery of the vehicle energy in the battery.
